The essence of the Reformation by Kirsten BirkettIn this short book, Kirsten Birkett provides us with a snappy outline to the Reformation - the split between the Medieval Catholic Church, and Protestants. She paints a picture of the social and religious soil in which it grew, the events and people which shaped it, the ideas and doctrines for which many of them died.
Unfortunately, these events, people and ideas are not well known today, even though in many ways, the Reformation made our world what it is. It provided the thinking and beliefs that shaped our political, social and religious world to this day.... and even gave us what is today the english language!
The events of the reformation are of the stuff of great stories. Corruption in the church. Political turmoil and intrigue. A clash of new ideas and ancient pagan religions. Courageous and extraordinary individuals. Doctrinal disputes that were matters of life and death.
This really is a book to read !
One of the Reformers, Calvin, has had a huge influence on how we do things at St Barnabas'. If you haven't yet met him... you really should. Either that or just come and ask Steve - he'll be happy to talk and talk about Calvin... so do yourself a favour and enjoy the read.
Book Outline:
Part 1 - Covers Medieval Christianity's struggles and compromises with paganism, the place of saints and miracles, the power of Priests and Church Corruption.

Part 2 - This section of the book looks at how Christians began to challenge this corrupt Christianity in each of Europe's main centers. For example Calvin (left) in switzerland.
Part 3 - This last section outlines in an easy to understand way, the theological significance which lay behind the changes which are still with us today.
happy reading - Steve Freddo
